The Price We Will Pay for Black Gold Last week, employees at Total’s six refineries went on strike to protest the company’s recent announcement to postpone its decision on permanently shutting down refining activities at the Flanders facility in northern France. Although Total’s CEO has said that the disruption will not affect the current supply, it’s no doubt that uncertainty surrounds the oil and gas industry from a global view. Fueled by American’s dependence on oil, the industry is under extreme pressure to deliver more of the black gold, and to deliver it fast. From political unrest in Nigeria to major oil companies partnering with Iraq in hopes of discovering the next large oil reserve in the Iraqi oil fields, oil is truly black gold these days. Are we on the brink of a global energy crisis? If the strike leads to a fuel shortage, how will it affect the world?
